FAQs About Your Dental Filling
settings
Why do I need a dental filling?
Although enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and contains roughly 96% of minerals, our teeth can still crack, get worn down, or experience cavities. Because of this, your dentist will need to fill these compromised places with a dental filling. This will help prolong the health of your teeth.
What happens during this appointment?
Your dental filling appointment will be fast and painless. You won’t feel any discomfort because Dr. Strandburg will numb the area with local anesthesia. After the anesthesia goes into effect, Dr. Strandburg will remove the bacteria and/or decay that has settled into the tooth. Once the area is clean, the filling will be administered and shaped to fit your bite.
Are there different types of dental fillings?
Yes! Dr. Strandburg can administer tooth-colored fillings or metal fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are offered in three types of material: composite, porcelain, and glass ionomer. Metal fillings are offered in two types of material: amalgam and cast gold. Dr. Strandburg will discuss the best option with you depending on the extent of the decay and which tooth has been damaged.
How do I care for my dental filling?
To best care for your dental filling, continue your oral-care regimen every day! A few tips include brushing your teeth twice per day, flossing at least once per day, using mouthwash, and avoiding too much sugar. Right after the procedure is complete, you might feel sensitivity near the filling site, but this will pass quickly.
